Cloudy Day Photoshoot: Why Overcast Weather Is Actually Perfect for Photos
This Post May Contain Affiliate LinksIf you’ve ever worried that a cloudy forecast might ruin your photoshoot, take a deep breath. As a Malibu-based photographer who shoots year-round along the coast and in the mountains, cloudy days have become some of my absolute favorite days to create soft, timeless, romantic imagery.
A cloudy day photoshoot doesn’t dull your photos. If anything, it elevates them. The light is super dreamy, even, and flattering, perfect for couples, maternity sessions, and intimate elopements.
In this guide, I’ll break down why overcast weather is secretly one of the best times for photos, how to prepare for your cloudy day session, and what to wear to make the most out of this beautiful, moody lighting.
Why Cloudy Days Are Amazing for Photos
Soft, Dreamy Light
Cloudy skies act like a giant diffuser, softening harsh shadows and creating flattering, even skin tones.
Even without direct sunlight, overcast lighting allows for beautiful depth and dimension. Colors photograph richer. Skin tones stay neutral. Highlights hold detail. This is the kind of lighting that gives your images that magazine-editorial feel.
More Location Flexibility
On bright sunny days, I’m selective about positioning so that there’s minimal hotspots on faces.
But for a cloudy day photoshoot? We can shoot anywhere.
Open fields, the beach, cliff sides, under trees, even near reflective water. They all look incredible with consistent, soft light.
No Harsh Wind or Heat
In Malibu and Los Angeles, our evenings can get windy, especially on the coast.
Cloudy days tend to be calmer, giving you more control over hair, dresses, and overall comfort.

How to Prepare for a Cloudy Day Photoshoot
1. Get There Early
Because of the soft lighting, you want to end your session at least an hour before sunset. But the good news is, you can get to your session as early as possible!
2. Wear Colors That Photograph Beautifully in Overcast Light
To complement the softness of the sky, choose:
Neutrals: creams, taupe, oatmeal, light grey
Soft pastels: blush, dusty blue, sage
Earth tones: warm browns, terracotta (for contrast)
3. Bring Layers
Cloudy days can be cooler, especially near the beach.
Cardigans
Sweaters
Soft shawls
Neutral jackets
Not only do they keep you warm, but they also add beautiful movement and texture to your images.
FAQ: Cloudy Day Photoshoot
Will my photos look dull without sunlight?
Not at all! Cloudy lighting creates soft, luminous tones and flattering skin.
Can we still get golden tones?
I personally don’t recommend editing golden tones on cloudy days. As someone who’s lived in Malibu (LA County) my whole life, it just looks like smog. But again, that’s just my personal opinion.
Will my photos look too “grey”?
I edit to bring depth, warmth, and life back into cloudy skies while keeping everything natural and airy.
What Happens If It Rains?
Light mist or drizzle can actually look incredible in photos—think cozy, romantic, movie-scene vibes.
But if it turns into heavy rain, we’ll reschedule or pivot to a covered outdoor location depending on your session type.
I always monitor the weather closely and keep my clients updated the entire time.
If you’re booked for a photoshoot and see clouds rolling in, don’t stress. Cloudy days are romantic, gentle, and incredibly flattering. They bring out real emotion and softness that can’t be replicated in harsh sun.
Some of my favorite images ever were taken on cloudy, moody afternoons.
If you’re dreaming of a fine-art, timeless, soft-inspired session, a cloudy forecast might just be the best thing that happens to your photos.
