A Sunny Lavender Field Family Session | Moorpark, CA
The Swanson’s family session among the lavender!
I was so elated when the Swanson’s reached out to me to do a family session at Underwood Family Farms! It was something I wanted to do for years, and I was finally able to do it!
The Swanson family were such a sweet family. We had so much fun playing in the lavender field with the kids, even though there were bees! But thankfully the lavender has a calming effect on the bees so they were happy just buzzing around during our session.
Tips for a Lavender Session at Underwood Family Farms
Underwood Family farms is beautiful, however, Moorpark gets super hot in the summer, which just so happens to be peak lavender season. These tips will keep you cool and happy during your session!
Get there at the perfect time: Underwood Family farm closes at 6pm over the summer, which is a full 2 hours before sunset. Their lavender field closes at 5:30pm. The latest you should start your session is at 4:30pm for the best light.
Bring Water: Lots of water! Here is my favorite water bottle for photoshoots.
Have your photographer bring a reflector: The lavender field at Underwood Family Farms does not have any shade. It’s full sun. And starting at 4:30pm means the sun is super bright. I brought an assistant and had her use my reflector to shade my lens, that way I wasn’t getting any sun flares.
Dress in light fabrics: It’s HOT, and that’s an understatement. Dress in cool fabrics and short sleeves so you’re not sweating and miserable during your session.
Bring sunscreen: I don’t really need to expand on this. But please bring sunscreen.
Be aware of Bees!!: There are bees EVERYWHERE among the lavender. Thankfully, the lavender has a super calming effect on the bees, so they were happy and calm. But it’s still a concern if you’re allergic to bees.
